Ash Wednesday Markings

Ash Wednesday is a day of “markings.” Today marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a church season of discipline and spirituality as we prepare for the joyous resurrection on Easter.

We also become physically marked with the imposition of ashes on our forehead, symbolizing our sinfulness as well as our mortality. It is a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in God’s call to repentance and reconciliation.

Avery has two opportunities to worship and receive ashes: 12 pm and 6:30 pm (each service will be about 45 minutes long).

If you cannot worship with us, I invite you to read Matthew 6:1-21, Joel 2:1-17, and use Psalm 51 as your own prayer of confession during a personal time of devotion and centering.

Above all, I pray that you will embrace the serious nature of this day – not in a solemn, depressing way, but in a way that gives testament to the reality that Christian discipleship sometimes demands reverence and meditation rather than joyous song.
