Mission & Service

“Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who will receive good things from my Father. Inherit the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world began. I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.’” ~ Matthew 25:34-36

As we grow in faith through participation in the church, we become nourished and equipped for mission and service in the world, starting with our local community but extending to the ends of the earth. Here are some of the ways we reach out in mission & service.

Tuesdays, 11 am-Noon

We partner with Washington Salvation Army to help children in our own community who go home hungry on the weekends. On Tuesdays throughout the school year, nutritious food is packed to be sent home with qualifying children at Trinity West and other area schools. Packing is at the Salvation Army building in downtown Washington.

Each summer, our youth spend a week working with U.M. Army to serve those in need of home repairs for a variety of reasons. In 2019, they went to Waynesboro, VA. In 2016-2018, they traveled to Danville, VA. Contact Youth Director Buddy Batson for details.

As part of the Western PA Conference of the UMC, Avery UMC is your entry point to be in mission in the United States and globally. Visit the Conference website for opportunities to serve.

We are always collecting items for Community Circle Food Pantry of Washington. A basket is in the Welcome Area for donations, and suggestions of items to donate is on the table in the back of the sanctuary.

We believe it's our mission to partner with and provide support to Trinity West Elementary School, located directly across the street from us. From time to time, we collect and donate lice kits, socks & shoes, winter coats, and Christmas gifts for the students.

The church is a place to learn more about important issues and challenges that impact our community. At Avery UMC, we raise awareness about Domestic Violence, Mental Health, Addiction, and Anti-Racism.
